VIKTOR BOUT hearing delayed until January 21, 2011

The high profile pre-trial hearing for Viktor Bout has been delayed until January 21, instead of the January 10 date which was originally planned. The hearing will take place after Viktor’s birthday of January 13, on which date he will turn 44, having spent the majority of his 40’s behind bars.

Viktor has spent time in the Klong Prem Remand Prison and the Bang Kwang Central Prison, both in Bangkok, Thailand, before being moved to the MCC in Manhattan, New York City, where he is currently being held in solitary confinement.

2010 in review – Viktor Bout Dot Net

To all the readers of Viktor Bout Dot Net, Here is the end of year summary for stats. Apparently, we did pretty well, considering most people just stop their research after reading the Wikipedia entry. Thanks to all those who went a little further – we will have some exclusive information coming out in January in anticipation for the next Viktor Bout / Andrew Smulian hearing in Manhattan, New York on January 10 20011.

Before we look at WordPress’s review, I will give you a quick review of the past year with :  We totally changed the site from a full site to a blog, because we felt it was a better way to provide the relevant information. However, we will come back with an additional page in 2011 providing some of that old info, mixed with some exclusive information we have here at ViktorBout Dot Net.

Also, we are going to start offering limited edition Viktor Bout T Shirts if you make a small donation to the website. We are not trying to make money off of the website, but maintaining it the past year and a half has cost money. Also, the more shirts are given out, the more awareness is raised for the case. That has been the goal of this site since the beginning. We want to get discussion going on the case, and we try not to give a biased report here. Both sides believe that an open discussion is good for the case. Every person who wears this unique shirt will be seen by hundreds if not thousands of people each day. Multiply this by the limited run of shirts (the first run is only 25 pieces) and this shirt will create a buzz and look cool too. We will have the paypal button up this week. These shirts ship from the home base of Viktor Bout Dot Net, Bangkok, Thailand to anywhere in the world.

WikiLeaks Viktor Bout Information Revealed

Wikileaks Viktor Bout Cables

Julian Assange and his WikiLeaks data dump have touched on the Viktor Bout case, as reported by the Wikileaks site. In total, there are thousands of documents yet to be released from the US Embassy Bangkok, mainly from Ambassador Eric John. Here is the run down:

– 75 “SECRET” documents
– 1,343 “CONFIDENTIAL” documents
– 1,523 “OTHER” documents

The two documents currently released can be read in their entirety here:

The cables detail American response after the various court rulings, and phone calls between American President Obama and Thai Prime Minister Abhisit.

In addition, a cable out of Dubai details how 2 of Viktor Bout’s planes have been abandoned at the Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) airport.

Here is the write-up from The Guardian:

In addition, the Bangkok Post has recently reported that the Thai and US governments will dispute the veracity of the WikiLeaks documents regarding Viktor Bout.

Eric John will be stepping down as Ambassador to Thailand. It was a difficult year for Mr. John, losing his daughter in a tragic accident in New York City, the Viktor Bout extradition case, and the wikileaks leaks.

The article can be seen here:

Mr Abhisit yesterday said the leaked classified documents had nothing to do with the Thai government.

Acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said the Thai and US governments would deny the authenticity of the documents on Viktor Bout released by WikiLeaks.

The government would respond to the documents officially if they affected Thailand’s relationship with other countries, Mr Panitan said.

He said Mr John would call on the prime minister today to take his official leave now that his tenure in Thailand has ended.

Deputy spokesman for foreign affairs Thani Thongphakdi said his ministry would examine the credibility and accuracy of the WikiLeaks report.

“However, the ministry could confirm that [the Bout case] was carried out in due legal process without interference or pressure from any side,” Mr Thani said.

“For us, the case is over.”

Viktor Bout’s wife, Alla Bout, Announces Details of the US Extradition Case

Alla Bout, wife of Russian businessman Viktor Bout, held a press conference at approximately 2pm this past Monday at the FCCT in the Maneeya Building, Chitlom, Bangkok, Thailand. She discussed her plans to do the following:

  • After having lived in Bangkok for over 2 1/2 years, Alla announced she will return to Moscow.
  • She will attempt to apply for a visa to the United States to stay in New York in order to assist with Viktor Bout’s case, involving 4 felony charges amounting to a jail sentence from 25 years to life. Russian citizens can travel freely to Thailand (Thai citizens can travel to Russia in a reciprocal fashion for 30 days without visa), but must obtain visas in order to travel to the USA.
  • Alla Bout confirmed that Viktor was abruptly taken, having been treated inhumanely by the American DEA agents, having stripped him of his clothing, giving him dirty sweat clothes, taking his personal possessions, and applying psychological pressure on the long flight to New York.
  • Alla Bout confirmed reports that Viktor Bout was likely offered some sort of amnesty deal for cooperation with federal US authorities.
  • She is drawing up papers to sue those Thai politicians who signed Viktor Bout’s custody over to the American DEA agents last Tuesday.
  • Alla Bout detailed why Viktor Bout’s sudden extradition was, according to Thai law, illegal.
  • The Bout’s Thai Lawyer, Mr. Lak, spoke about the details of the US-Thai Extradition treaties. Lak also spoke in detail about how Viktor’s case should have been considered under an older Thai law (grandfather’d in) and not the newer 2008 law, since the US Extradition case started before the new law was enacted.
  • Mrs. Bout detailed how the Bout family is actually in debt, having to support her daughter in Russia and herself in Thailand, paying for rent, food, transportation fees, visa fees, and Viktor’s care. They may consider suing for compensation for these expenses in a Thai court.
  • The Bout family is also considering legal action against those who started the landslide of negative press against Viktor Bout, especially those involved in the Lord of War movie and Merchant of Death book.

Popular American TV Show 60 Minutes Features Viktor Bout this Evening

Viktor Bout 60 Minutes Program

The well respected American News show 60 Minutes from CBS NEWS will feature Viktor Bout this evening at 7pm Eastern Standard Time (New York, Washington, DC) in the US. For those located in Bangkok, like us, choices seem to be limited to watching on satellite TV, downloading it off of iTunes when it becomes available, or using some internet TV service.

The preview of the episode can be seen here, and it isn’t looking good for Viktor Bout, as he is named one of the most dangerous men on the face of the earth. I urge viewers to watch the program with an objective mind, taking note of the facts of the case.;60minutes

For those not familiar with 60 Minutes, this airing is very important. The program is heavily respected among Americans for being thorough and true. With the arrival of Mr. Bout having already brought about much news coverage this past week, many Americans will already be familiar with him. It is likely that many American people’s first impressions will come from this program. Much of the content for this episode of 60 Minutes was filmed in Bangkok.

Viktor Bout Pleads Not Guilty to 4 Charges – Andrew Smulian Pleads Guilty

Viktor Bout appeared in court in New York City and plead not guilty to the 4 charges brought against him over 2 1/2 years.

The key to the case is and has been Andrew Smulian, who has pleaded guilty to the charges and will testify against Bout.

The Viktor Bout Dot Net website has been focused on the case here in Bangkok, and now that it is over, we will focus the site on providing insightful information about the case that most mass media outlets fail to mention. However, because we are not physically in New York, we cannot provide the quickest updates on the case. Until then, the site will be on hiatus, just like Viktor Bout, whose next court appearance is January 10 in New York.

We still provide a way to contact Viktor and his family by email: if you would like to extend a message to him. You can also write to him at the Correctional Facility in New York.
